Surprises...The Wonders of the Unexpected
Today I sat eating lunch in my Southern Californian home. It is summer time and the temperatures have been in the high eighties, and low nineties all week. I smelled rain in the air, but surely not today I thought. A few moments later I was surprised to hear the pitter patter of light rain. It was a pleasant surprise.
I have never been one to be easily shocked or surprised, and I abhor the thought of a surprise party. But as of late I have been pleasantly surprised. I have been surprised by the actions of others, and even some romantic gestures. I was surprised by a stranger letting me go ahead of her at the grocery store because she had a lot of stuff. I was surprised to be carded buying prosecco, and have the salesman comment on how great I looked for my age, especially with no make-up.
I was also surprised to put on shorts, which I almost never wear, and have my teenage daughter comment on how great my legs looked. I was equally surprised when my 8 year old daughter said they were too short and I needed to change clothes. They were not short shorts, but she didn't want mommy showing too much skin. These little unexpected things can really make someone's day or a week.
I think it comes down to being kind to others, just because you can, and focusing on the positive. Telling others how you feel, and sharing your truth. The imperfect life can still be full of so much joy, and happiness. You just need to know when to stop searching and just be. The surprises will continue to come because life is full of the unexpected. So why not be someone else's unexpected? Why not make someone else's day wonderful?
