Is Love at First Sight Real? What Psychology Says About Instant Attraction
Love at first sight is a phenomenon. You see someone across a crowded room and feel an instant connection and a gut feeling that this person is who you were meant to be with.
Fortunately, luck would have it that the one you fell in love with at first sight just so happens to be hot or gorgeous. No coincidence there, right?
Love, at first sight, is rare, but do you believe it can actually happen? Many will poo poo the concept of love at first sight, and rightfully so, in my opinion.
I mean after all, what could we possibly know about someone after just one sighting or meeting? But others are firm believers that it can happen, mainly because it has happened to them.
Movies and literature would have you believe that love at first happens all of the time and will lead to a “happily ever after” ending.
I mean, after all, didn’t Cinderella get her glass slipper after just one encounter? A moment in time can be wonderful, but what happens when reality sets in?
Here’s What Psychology Says About Love At First Sight
Most psychologists stress the importance of distinguishing attraction from love. People can form first impressions in milliseconds. Within seconds of meeting someone, your brain is already evaluating their body language, facial expressions, their voice, and yes, their level of attractiveness. There is also a perceived familiarity and trustworthiness with this attractive stranger. The immediate reaction to your initial assessment can be powerful and feel like love, but psychologists will say it is likely just attraction.
Psychologists say you can absolutely experience attraction, chemistry, and a profound sense of connection at first sight. Whether it becomes love depends on what happens afterward.
How Biology Plays A Part
That instant attraction you feel is not just happening in your heart and eyes; it’s happening in your brain. The dopamine hit you get when the initial attraction happens is an electric feeling. You feel excited and energized by the feeling. The oxytocin hit you get from being in close proximity to this person will make you feel bonded to them and more physically attracted to them.

You Can’t Love What You Do Not Know
I have often heard love at first sight referred to as “lust” at first sight, and I have to agree. While I have personally never felt like I have fallen in love with someone at first sight, I have had that instant attraction.
I have experienced seeing someone from across the room and feeling a strong emotion as our eyes met. The next time our paths crossed we hit it off and dated for a couple of years. Was it love at first sight? No, it was not love because I didn’t know him, I desired him. Big difference in my opinion.
Would it surprise you to know that more than 50 percent of people believe in love at first sight? It surprised me quite honestly. It just goes to show how much we link feelings of love to physical attraction, at least initially. I say initially because we tend to find people more or less attractive as we get to know them, which I think disproves the possibility of love at first.
What I believe can happen is that an initial attraction and fascination can grow and turn into everlasting love.
What are your thoughts on love at first sight? Are you a believer or a cynic? Has it ever happened to you? Can it be love at first sight if the feeling is only one-sided? Please share your story and experience!
“I meant it when I said I didn’t believe in love at first sight. It takes time to really, truly fall for someone. Yet I believe in a moment. A moment when you glimpse the truth within someone, and they glimpse the truth within you. In that moment, you don’t belong to yourself any longer, not completely. Part of you belongs to him; part of him belongs to you. After that, you can’t take it back, no matter how much you want to, no matter how hard you try.” - Claudia Gray, A Thousand Pieces Of You

5 Signs He May Be Cheating (And How to Respond Wisely)
Trust is everything in a relationship. It is a miserable feeling when you think your partner may be stepping out on you. Chances are, if you are suspicious you have a pretty good reason to be so.
It's that gut feeling, and really just knowing your man. If something feels off, then that it is because something is off.
It is a big leap to go from having a suspicion to accusing. I had the unfortunate experience many years ago of playing detective in a relationship, and as much as I enjoy being right, I had hoped to be wrong in that situation.
The truth is, if you think he's cheating, he probably is. Or at least he wants to, or is thinking about it.
The 5 Signs Of Cheating
He Seems Distant
The distance you feel can come in the form of physical as well, but he is mostly going to be mentally and emotionally distant. He is no longer open with you and is not interested in you.
He is not interested in talking to you very much, and when he does talk to you, he is barely listening or engaged.
Physically he can avoid you by working late or avoiding your home life. He may also create distance by sleeping on the couch, or coming to bed after you have already turned in for the night.
Featured Video
You Catch Him In Lies
Being lied to is infuriating and hurtful when it’s someone you really love and trust, but if he’s cheating, the lies are the biggest telltale. He is not where he said he was going to be or suddenly becomes unreachable and perhaps even stops sharing his location. He is suddenly working later and is not home when he said he would be. You casually ask him about his whereabouts, and you don’t buy his story. You can tell he's lying to you even though you cannot prove it.
He Avoids Intimacy
He avoids your touch and is no longer very affectionate. Kisses, hand holding, and cuddling are a thing of the past. He rarely initiates sex anymore, when once upon a time he couldn't keep his hands off of you.
When you do have sex with him, he is not there mentally. He seems to be a million miles away, and possibly even thinking of someone else.
A big sign of intimacy avoidance is failing to look you in the eyes. Gazing into each other’s eyes is extremely intimate and creates a connection. Failure to make that eye contact shows that he may be emotionally checked out of the relationship and focused elsewhere.
He's Secretive
If your partner suddenly becomes secretive, he is definitely hiding something. He doesn't allow you to see his phone, his emails, or his wallet. If you walk into the room unexpectedly, he will quickly close his laptop or close out of things on his computer. He has changed passwords and gets defensive when you ask questions.
The Relationship Feels Off
The relationship feels off, but is there someone else? Is he really cheating? Your partner has become different, almost like a stranger to you. It feels off because it is. You sense that he is no longer into you; he is no longer in love with you and is just going through the motions. Yes, he could just have something personal going on that he is not sharing, but I am also big on trusting instincts.
What To Do
First off, don’t freak out. You may want to freak out, but you need to keep a clear head. You do not want to act out of emotion and anger (yes, I know it’s easier said than done) and accuse your partner of something they just may be innocent of.
You have options if you think you are being cheated on. The first is to confront the situation directly and ask your partner if they are having an affair, including emotional and online affairs. Of course, this is the scariest option because you may not get the answer or response you are hoping for, but for many of us it is better to know.
There is also the big possibility that he is going to lie because he's not quite ready to call it quits and leave the comfortable home life.
You could take a more conservative approach, and just discuss your concerns about how you feel the relationship has changed, and tell your partner how it makes you feel.
The positive to this approach is that it puts your feelings out there, but if he is already done and emotionally closed to you, this conversation will go nowhere. In fact, the discussion may annoy him and give him an excuse to grab his keys and go get some "fresh air".
The last option is to play detective. This is probably the most mentally anguishing and painful choice to make, but you may find the answers you need. You clearly do not trust him, and will drive yourself nuts trying to find evidence that there is someone else, all the while hoping there is no evidence.
The positive is that you may not find a smoking gun, but the negative is that your gut is telling you he is involved or in love with someone else.
The Reality
A cheater is not likely to admit to cheating. They will usually lie through their teeth, until you have indisputable evidence of their infidelity. Trust your instincts in this case, because chances are your gut is on to something. They are cheating or thinking about it.
Counseling is usually recommended for marital issues, including infidelity. Of course this would mean that your man has come clean about his cheating, and is willing to do the work to get the relationship back on track.
I suppose the "positive" in the case of marital infidelity is that a man is statistically unlikely to leave his marriage for his lover. However, the negative in this matter is his motivation for staying in the marriage. A man will stay for financial reasons, for the kids, and to maintain a status and the appearance of a happy family life.
The 5 signs listed are not all inclusive. In fact, you may find that your man becomes extra nice and buys you gifts to help him alleviate his guilt. He may also have a revved-up sex drive with you to cover up his extra activities, and also to relieve his pent-up sexual desires because he cannot have the other woman in the moment.
We all have our relationship deal breakers, and only you know what is tolerable and acceptable for you. Many relationships survive infidelity, but I am not sure if anyone ever gets over the broken trust, and feelings of betrayal.
What are your thoughts on cheating? What signs do you consider red flags? Please share your experience!

Dating After Divorce: How To Start Dating Again and Find Love
I feel like just about everyone I know is getting divorced, has been divorced, or is contemplating divorce. And although divorce has been around for centuries, there is still a stigma around it, with many outsiders judging the decision without knowing the facts. Sometimes, the shame of not being able to make your marriage work, fear of judgement from others, and perhaps a hit to your self-esteem and feeling like you were not enough all directly impact how you move on and go about meeting a new mate.
The version of you that entered the marriage is not the version that left it. You may be leaving the marriage with many assets or perhaps a lot of debt. You may now be a parent with children to consider or figuring out who gets the pets. And after a failed marriage, you are likely a little more cynical about love and marriage, and are not looking forward to being in the dating market.
Life is short, and wanting someone to enjoy the rest of your life with is normal, but the question is, how do you go about finding that person? Where to start? Well, the good news is, you do have lots of options on how to meet people, but the unfortunate truth is that results may vary.
Ways To Date After Divorce
Dating Apps
I know dating apps are the obvious choice and many people are on them; however, whether or not you meet your person depends heavily on which apps you use, your frequency on the apps, and what you are looking for. According to research, anywhere from 10% to 30% of app users have found marriage or committed relationships via dating apps.
While I have never used a dating app, I have heard many horror stories. To find success using a dating app, you may need to kiss a lot of frogs, so to speak, to find your prince charming. I do know someone who got married to someone they met on a dating app, so it’s definitely possible to find your person on there.
Matchmaking
You can use a matchmaker or a matchmaking service or be set up on dates by mutuals. The positives about this option are that the potential mates are a little more vetted and better suited for you, on paper. Also, someone who is using a matchmaking service is showing they are interested in more than just a casual hookup. Yes, the service will cost some money, but it may ease your mind and make you feel better about putting yourself back on the market.
A Blast From The Past
Not going to lie, this is my personal favorite. With this option, you allow yourself to be open to a past crush, a past love, or an old friend. You and this person have history. Now, if the history was bad, like cheating or poor treatment, keep it moving because they have not likely changed. But if in the past it was a timing issue, like the two of you were never available at the same time or your lives were taking you to different places or directions, and the attraction is currently there, I’d say go for it. What do you have to lose? Being that I am a romantic at heart, I love the second-chance love stories for high school sweethearts years later.
Just a reminder that intent matters. Ask yourself, if you are looking for a lover and the occasional hookup? Or are you more interested in companionship, like someone to travel with and just have fun with? Or is marriage important to you, and you know you want to be married again and are looking for someone desiring a committed relationship that will lead to marriage? It is important to be honest with yourself so you can find the right match.
To be clear, there is no right or wrong way to date after divorce. You have to decide what you are comfortable with and what works for you. It’s okay to take your time and go slow in new relationships. And I also suggest you ask yourself what you learned about yourself from your marriage ending. Do you feel like you have grown as a person?
Of course, if you are happily single and looking to stay that way, then this blog isn’t for you. But if you are interested in finding someone to spend time with or create a life with, you have three great options.
Final Thoughts
If you are divorced or in the process of getting divorced and wondering how to get back out in the dating scene, do not fear. Trust me, you are not alone, and I can relate. No one gets married thinking they will get a divorce, but unhappiness, incompatibility, and obviously abuse, whether physical, emotional, or financial, are all solid reasons to end the marriage contract. It didn’t work for a reason, and that’s okay. Live your life, find your person, and find your happiness. And please feel free to share your divorced and dating stories with us!

Here’s What You Should Be Watching This Summer
I love a good series to binge-watch, especially during the summer when it feels too hot to be outside, but with so many options, it can feel impossible to decide what to watch.
I have 7 series recommendations I think you will enjoy and 3 bonus reality television recommendations.
Silo
Men and women live in a giant silo underground with several regulations that they believe are in place to protect them from the toxic and ruined world on the surface.
Silo has become one of my favorite science fiction series, based on an amazing book series. It has layers and layers of mystery. The cast is great, and the visuals of the massive silo are breathtaking.
New episodes for season 3 are currently streaming weekly on Apple TV.
The Boroughs
In a seemingly picturesque retirement community, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don't have - time.
This is a fun but spooky and mysterious show to watch. Currently available on Netflix. I highly recommend. All episodes are available to watch.
Ride Or Die
Debbie discovers that her friend of 20 years, Judith, is secretly an assassin. After a hit goes wrong, they go on the run while being targeted by a mysterious enemy, forcing them to confront the secrets between them.
This is a fun, action-packed series that will keep you locked in and make you laugh. New episodes are currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
The Five Star Weekend
A beloved food influencer grappling with loss hosts four friends from different chapters of her life for a weekend on Nantucket, where hidden truths emerge, and relationships evolve amid coastal luxury.
This is a classic “dramedy,” which I found somewhat predictable but still an entertaining watch. It’s low-stakes but binge-worthy, and all episodes are currently streaming on Peacock.
Cape Fear
A happily married couple faces a growing threat when a notorious killer from their past, Max Cady, is released from prison and seeks revenge.
Javier Bardem does not disappoint in this remake of a remake series. It’s creepy, suspenseful, and will have you yelling at your television. Cape Fear the series is currently streaming on Apple TV.
Widows’s Bay
A skeptical mayor leads the superstitious residents of a cursed New England island.
Widow’s Bay is marketed as a comedy, but it is creepy as hell and has some jump scares. But it really is such a fun watch, and the cast is great. Get your popcorn and turn off the lights when you watch to really set the mood. I cannot recommend this show enough. All episodes for season one are streaming on Apple TV.
House of the Dragon
An internal succession war within House Targaryen at the height of its power, 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.
If you loved watching Game of Thrones, you will certainly enjoy House of the Dragon. I was actually late to watching this series, but now I am all caught up and enjoying the weekly episode drops this season. You can watch all episodes on HBO Max.
Also, here are some current reality TV recommendations just for some additional fun if that’s your thing.
Love Island UK
Single hopefuls looking for love complete tasks, couple off and get voted out week by week. Packed full of drama.
The current season is still dropping new episodes, but we are getting close to the end. Fortunately, there are not too many spoilers out there, so you can feel free to enjoy. You can watch Love Island UK (the OG) on Hulu.
Love Island USA
U.S. version of the British show 'Love Island', where a group of singles come to stay in a villa for a few weeks and have to couple up with one another.
Love Island season 8 just wrapped up, and you may have seen a few spoilers, but I still think the series is worth a watch. You can watch all of the Love Island USA series on Peacock.
Married At First Sight
A reality show that follows singles yearning for a lifelong partnership as they agree to a provocative proposal: getting legally married to a stranger the moment they first meet.
The new season of Married At First Sight is equally cringe-worthy and entertaining. I admit the show can be a little bit of a train wreck, but I find it fascinating that people are willing to marry literal strangers. I suppose that says a lot about how hard it is to find your person.
You can watch Married At First Sight on Peacock.
All of the above shows are great, and I do not think you will be disappointed. The 4 shows I chose offer a good variety of action, adult, family-friendly, and science fiction.
So what are your recommendations? What great shows am I missing that I need to give a try? Please share your thoughts and recommendations!

Proximity and Attraction: How We Start To Covet What We See and Fall In Love
I have a theory about attraction and falling in love. After years of watching hours of reality television dating shows and observing friends and colleagues date and fall in love, it is clear that proximity is the key to attraction and falling for someone, regardless of differing backgrounds, races, and our ideal types. In fact, I believe we are “programmed”, very young in life, by exposure, to have specific beliefs about what is attractive and beautiful, as well as what is unattractive or less desirable. But I also believe those limited thoughts on beauty and who we “should” want to be with can be changed with exposure and proximity, which often challenges those thoughts. Let’s discuss.
Do You Have A Type?
How has having a “type” worked out for you so far? If asked, most people will say they have a type and when they describe their type, that person is usually how that individual’s society or culture would describe a conventionally attractive person. For some that may mean blonde hair and blue eyes or a thin figure with large breasts and long hair, or perhaps bigger butts and teeny tiny waists. Women may want the tall, dark, and handsome man who looks perfect without a shirt on and has thick wavy hair, which is perfect for running your fingers through. But in reality, most people don’t look like our type, or if they do, they may not be compatible or equally attracted to us.
Exposure
In the military, I saw the most unlikely pairings and was pursued by guys who came from vastly different backgrounds than my own. Men from different races who had never had friends outside of their own race or ethnicities and had never dated outside of their race became great friends of mine and some pursued me romantically. Growing up in southern California in a multi-racial family, I was always surrounded by a diverse group of people, so being around people from other races and backgrounds was nothing new to me. It never occurred to me that some people did not have this type of racial and cultural exposure, exposure which I think helped make me a better, more well rounded person.
People who you would not normally interact with in every day society can become a coworker and a friend who shatters all of your assumptions and stereotypes. In “The Silence of the Lambs” the question is asked, “how do we first began to covet?” and the answer is “we covet what we see every day”. To covet is to desire or long for something or someone that is not yours.
Proximity
Proximity is closeness or nearness and for the purpose of this blog we are talking about physical proximity. Think fellow student, a neighbor, or a work colleague. Because we tend to covet what we see every day, we can develop crushes and legitimate feelings for someone, regardless of their looks, as we get to know them and like them as a person.
Liking someone from a different race or background does not mean you are fetishizing them or are being fetishized. Social media uses the term fetishizing incorrectly quite often. In the context of this blog, to fetishize is to objectify a person based on their race, culture, or physical features. For example, someone who fetishizes black women, just wants a black woman without care for her as an individual and will view her as interchangeable with other black women.
The surprise of getting to know someone, whom at first meeting you thought would be a completely different person is the best. You were ready to write them off based on preconceived ideas of who they were and suddenly you find yourself laughing and chatting with them all the time. And sometime those laughs and chats leads to one or both of you catching feelings.
The Fall
Falling for someone who is not your physical type on paper is not settling, it’s being realistic and realizing that what we thought we wanted is not necessarily for us. Unfortunately, ladies who are looking for their guy, I hate to break it to you but there probably is not an available six-foot-two, handsome, billionaire man who is kind and loving, and just waiting to sweep you off of your feet. Maybe these men exist, but there certainly are not enough of them to go around. But maybe, just maybe, the cute, five-foot-nine guy who adores you and is your work bestie can be your prince charming, if you are open to it.
Remember, this is not about settling, it is about being open, and being aware of what may be right in front of you. And just because someone is nice to you and likes does not mean you are expected to automatically like them back. I am just saying, do not miss out on your person, just because they are packaged differently than you imagined. But also, always use discernment.
So what are your thought on proximity and attraction? Have you ever met someone at school or work and felt no desire to give them a second glance and then you get to know them and can barely keep yourself from staring at them? That’s proximity working its magic. You like them for them, which is far more authentic than basing a relationship on expectations and looks alone. Please share your thoughts and experience!

Sexual chemistry is an exuberayting feeling. It gives you a dopamine boost and makes you feel like you are going to float away or faint from the intensity of one simple feeling or interaction.
Sexual chemistry is an immediate and intense attraction to another person, characterized by both physical and emotional reactions like a rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, or a general sense of euphoria when near them. It’s the spark that jump starts many relationships.
I remember on one occasion where he who shall not be named, squeezed in next to me in a crowded room. When he leaned into my neck and whispered in my ear to ask a question, I felt my pulse begin to race as I started to break out into a sweat. In a room full of people, I wasn’t sure, hoped in fact, that no one noticed the quick interaction between us but I’m certain he was aware of my physical reaction. I saw him blush as he began to perspire as well. We both knew what just happened. There was strong sexual chemistry between us.
If you’re wondering if you have strong sexual chemistry with someone, I got you. Here are 12 signs of strong sexual chemistry.
12 Signs of Strong Sexual Chemistry
Prolonged Stares and Eye Contact

Blushing
Eagerness for Engagement and Interaction With Each Other

Or you could suggest you two hang out and do something together. You could get coffee, a cocktail, or engage in an activity you both enjoy. What’s the worse that could happen? Your crazy strong sexual chemistry is worth exploring. Right?
In case you’re not ready or interested in exploring the sexual chemistry, you can always just enjoy the yearning until it fades, if it fades, and go on with your life.

Can Friends Become Lovers? How to Know When It's Worth the Risk
I have always thought that being friends before lovers was the key to long lasting, happy, and healthy relationships. You may have a friend you immediately thought about when you read the blog title but before you go making your friendship awkward, I have some things for you to consider first. Let’s discuss how to transition from friends to lovers.
The Power of Friendship First
A strong foundation makes for a wonderful relationship, and I am a big believer in the benefits of friends-to-lovers relationships. Being friends before lovers usually means you have a strong foundation established. Friendships are based on share interests, commonality, and shared values.
As a friendship develops, you learn how to communicate effectively with each other and to respect boundaries. Great communication and ability to openly and honestly discuss thoughts, feeling, and beliefs are the pillars needed for any long term romantic relationship.
Signs of Potential
In case you are unsure if your friendship has the ability to transition to more, you will need to look for signs of potential. One of the biggest signs that a friendship may be ready to transition to a romantic relationship is increased intimacy, both emotional and physical. You start spending more time alone talking or texting. The increased desire for communication and interaction may be a sign of romantic feelings.
Another sign is mutual physical attraction which may be demonstrated by long stares and prolonged eye contact, as well a frequent touching, even as simple as picking a piece of lint off of their clothes.
And the last big sign is that others think you are a couple because your interactions with one another give off more than just friends vibe.
Navigating the Transition
The transition from friendship to romantic couple can be tricky and uncomfortable to initially discuss because one of you will need to be willing to put yourself out there and ask your friend if they are feeling the same way about you. To transition your friendship you will need clear communication, mutual consent, and to respect boundaries as the relationship dynamics change.
Also, you should openly discuss your desire to explore your romantic connection with your friend and make sure they are comfortable with the relationship change.
Potential Challenges
While there is so much potential for everlasting bliss with a transition from friendship to lovers, there are also a lot of challenges and risks involved as well. What if the romantic feelings are one-sided and you have read your friend completely wrong? Fear of rejection is normal and one of you may be rejected in this situation for several reasons. The first being a lack of attraction and romantic chemistry on their end. One of may not be romantically attracted to the other and stating so will make things awkward for the both of you.
The second reason for rejection may be because one of you does not want to risk losing your friendship if the romantic relationship fails and therefore would opt to just stay friends.
Both of you will need to decide how to proceed but if one says no, their decision and boundaries will need to be respected and accepted without blame, anger, or resentment if a friendship is to be maintained.
Building a Lasting Connection
I am a romantic and hope two friends who feel that romantic pull are able to make the successful transition from friends to lovers. Three key components for a successful transition are open communication, active listening, and respecting individual needs. Being able to discuss your needs, hopes, desires, and expectations for the new stage in your relationship is paramount its success.
Moving forward in the relationship be sure to pay attention to each other’s emotions and perspective and continue to have fun with one another.
I hope this blog provided some clarity on what to look for and how to make the transition from friends to lovers. In my opinion, friends to lovers make the best relationship. Now, I am not saying that every relationship is destined to turn romantic because beyond the friendship, there needs to be mutual attraction and physical chemistry but having a great friendship with a wonderful person you are attracted to is a great start.
What are your thoughts on friends transitioning to lovers? Any experience with it? Please share your thoughts and stories!
